As many of you know, Dave previously battled a rare form of cancer. While the cancer has been in full remission for quite some time, it left him with a severely compromised immune system. Unfortunately, Dave contracted the Covid-19 virus at the end of December and on Thursday, January 28th, following associated complications, Dave went to be with our Lord Jesus. His passing was peaceful and very swift. His battle here on earth has finished but his LIFE in heaven has only just begun.
Following a private burial, we will be celebrate Dave’s life at our local church in Seguin, TX, on Monday, February 1st. Doors will open at 4:00 and services will start at 4:30. We will have a memory book available for those who would like to share something about Dave. Feel free to bring a prepared contribution - a funny story, a favorite picture, or a heartfelt message. If you have a "rare" photo of Dave and would like to share a copy of that - we would love to add it to the memory book as well. Your contribution will be attached to the book or you are welcomed to write something on the pages at the service. If you are unable to attend, but would like to contribute to the memory book, you can email me directly at suzanne@bortel.com.
We have received a lot of questions on how people can help our family during this time. Naturally, we have set up a CareCalendar to help manage the needs of our family during this difficult time.

This is Dave’s legacy; he built CareCalendar for moments such as this and while it is now a little surreal to use this program for our own needs in his absence, we are also grateful to be able to continue the program in his memory.
One of the original beta testers for the CareCalendar, and someone Dave truly admired and considered as a close family friend, has stepped in to manage the development and support needs for CareCalendar. She runs a software development company and has both the technical skills and user experience to keep us moving forward. She, along with her talented team, will be taking over the codebase and customer support starting this week. If you have a support ticket pending reply, you can expect a response this week.
We apologize for the delay you may have experienced the last couple of weeks with support requests, but we are very thankful for your patience as we shift operations away from Dave’s home base to her remote team.
In lieu of flowers please consider a donation to CareCalendar, in Dave’s honor. As you know, CareCalendar has always been provided free of charge and that will not change. We are grateful to be able to continue providing CareCalendar as a service for others, and appreciate having a friend who will honor’s Dave’s desire to use his God-given talents to serve others. CareCalendar is supported financially by donations and sponsorships from individuals, organizations and businesses. Your support will help ensure that CareCalendar will remain free of charge for anyone that needs this service.
On behalf of myself, our 12 children, our son-in-laws and daughter-in-laws, and our three sweet grandchildren, I want to thank all of you who have prayed for Dave, and who will continue to pray for our family as we move into a new season of life.
